Semiotics

The International Master’s Degree Programme in Semiotics is an Master’s programme hosted by the Institute for Art Research at the Faculty of Arts. Participating partners at the University of Helsinki are the Department of Sociology, the Department of Slavonic and Baltic Languages and Literatures, and the Christina Institute for Women’s Studies. Close co-operation through exchange agreements is carried out with 9 European universities and research institutes.

The programme has interdisciplinary scope, bringing together approaches from related fields such as gender studies, musicology, and philosophy. Teaching is largely based on research and benefits from the Institute for Art Research’s high profile, where focus on semiotics has traditionally been in the analysis of music, literature, cinema, and in the elaboration of different theoretical paradigm, most notably those of American pragmatism, continental structuralism, existentialism, hermeneutics, zoosemiotics, and the theory of cultural semiotics.

With the contribution of both Finnish and international experts working with the programme the students will specialise in their track of semiotic analysis. As international co-operation is a key element in the programme, students acquire as part of their studies valuable experience of work in multi- and intercultural environments.

The Semiotics programme offers students the opportunity to develop either a research or a job market oriented profile through the selection of optional courses and of the dissertation topic. For research oriented students, post-graduate (PhD) studies in Finland and abroad is the main orientation, whereas students having a job market oriented profile can successfully look for careers in media, public relations and advertisement companies, IT technology, consultancy as well as in diverse sectors in public administration.
