The city
The seaside city of Vaasa (Vasa in Swedish) was founded in 1606 by King Charles IX of Sweden and it is the third biggest city in the province of Western Finland. At present, Vaasa has about 57,000 inhabitants of whom 72 per cent are Finnish-speaking and 27 per cent Swedish-speaking. With its 12 000 students, Vaasa is a lively student city. It is also a distinctively international city: in number of foreigners per capita, Vaasa is second only to the capital Helsinki.

Social activities
The cultural life of Vaasa is lively. The Finnish Vaasa Town Theatre, the Swedish Wasa Theatre, and the City Orchestra, the Vaasa Opera Company, and numerous other musical groups, choirs and theatres ensure a bustling cultural life for the City. The Vaasa art collections and the Ostrobothnian Museum’s folklore collection are among the finest in the country.
There is an extensive range of sporting facilities provided by athletic clubs, workers’ associations, and private companies in Vaasa – all of these no doubt have something to offer to everybody. In addition, the Students Union of the University of Vaasa, with its committees and clubs, offers students a great deal of activities, such as parties, social evenings, visits to cultural events, various forms of physical recreation, and a lot more.

Student accommodation facilities are situated in various parts of the city, generally in the form of terraced houses or blocks of flats.
Students are expected to contact VOAS directly. The electronic application form and information on apartments is available at VOAS website at www.voas.fi.
Student_union
The purpose of the Student Union of the University of Vaasa (VYY) is to unite students and promote their social and spiritual ambitions. VYY is there for its members - its function is to connect its members and enhance their societal, social and mental welfare. VYY is a member of the National Union of Finnish Students (SYL), whose purpose is to promote students' rights and formulate policies on a national level. It is also a member of the ESN (Erasmus Student Network).
All degree and exchange students enrolled at the University can belong to the Student Union and therefore use the services provided by VYY.
