Åbo Akademi University was founded in 1918 and is the only Swedish-language multi-disciplinary university in Finland. The university offers both undergraduate and postgraduate studies and extensive research opportunities to some 7,000 students on three campuses.
Åbo Akademi University is located close to the city centre, in the heart of the old part of the city of Turku. The campus offers a safe, friendly and welcoming environment for students. The university is characterised by its small size, good student-teacher relations, rich traditions and its highly flexible study environment.

The city

Turku is a fascinating combination of both old and new. Turku has everything for the modern urbanite.

Turku offers skilled and educated workforce, modern municipal engineering, good international connections and flexible services for companies and businesses.

Turku is a city of three institutions of higher education and high technology. In addition to the University of Turku and the Turku School of Economics and Business, the city is the home of the country's only Swedish-speaking institute of higher education, Åbo Akademi University.
The city can also offer studies at Turku University of Applied Sciences, Sydväst University of Applied Sciences, Humak University of Applied Sciences and Diaconia University of Applied Sciences.

The city has altogether approx. 35, 000 higher education students.

The schools and businesses work in close co-operation at the Turku Technology Centre, which units are BioCity, DataCity, ElectroCity, EuroCity and the Old Mill.

Turku is a nationally remarkable harbor, trade and fair city.

As the most famous cultural city in Finland, Turku offers many different types of events round the year. For example, the oldest rock festival in Europe, Ruisrock, and the bit younger city festival, Down by the Laituri, are held in Turku in the summertime. In addition, the Medieval Market, Music Festival Aurajoki Virtaa and the Turku Music Festival are also part of the summer in Turku.

What does the Student Union of Åbo Akademi University do?

Lots of things. Here's a summary:
The student union organisation is split into two sectors. One sector takes care of the business side of things, which means the running of the student cafeterias, maintaining the building, and making budgetary and financial decisions. The other sector is responsible for representing students' interests. This is the sector that you'll notice more, and which you can also get involved in. Part of this takes place at a national level, in cooperation with the Finnish National Union of Students (FSF/SYL). Part of this takes place at local level, within Åbo Akademi.
