The city
The city of Lappeenranta has 58 000 inhabitants and is located in South Karelia in the Finnish Lakeland, some 220 km east of Finland’s capital, Helsinki, and about 230 km northwest of St. Petersburg in Russia.
Lappeenranta was founded in 1649 on the site of an ancient market place and has, for centuries, been part of the old, historical Karelia – a real borderland between the cultures of East and West.
Lappeenranta is the administrative and cultural centre of the surrounding province. The city covers an extensive area, stretching from the shores of the beautiful Lake Saimaa to the Russian border. Its special location at the northern tip of the Saimaa Canal opens up water connections both to the Gulf of Finland and to the entire Saimaa waterway. The longest waterway to the north is about 500 km. The city is also the largest inland port in Finland.
Social activities
Students at LUT do not only occupy themselves with their studies! The Student Union, together with the different student clubs, organises social and sports activities. There are a number of active student societies on campus. These include a movie, camera, music, climbing, and motorcycle club, just to mention a few.
The Student Union organises parties where you can sample food from different countries, movie nights and other activities for international students.
The university and the surrounding area offer excellent possibilities for athletics. Students can use the university’s sports hall from the morning until late at night, and there is also a gym that students can use free of charge. Lake Saimaa, with its numerous islands, is a paradise for anyone who enjoys aquatic activities. Sailing, canoeing, rowing, surfing, fishing and swimming are all possible on Saimaa.
Accomodations
Student accommodation is offered by the Lappeenranta Student Housing Foundation LOAS.
