The city
The city of Cardiff offers an excellent location in which to live and study. Students at Cardiff benefit from the combination of a small, friendly inexpensive city with the cultural and recreational amenities of a progressive modern capital. Cardiff’s population is 315,000, which means that, while the city is developing constantly, it is not overcrowded. Independent researchers who examined factors such as the environment, cost of living and crime rate in 38 towns and cities in England and Wales concluded that Cardiff offers a higher quality of life than any other established university city.
The University is set in Cardiff’s impressive civic centre. With its wide tree-lined avenues, ornamental parkland and Portland stone neoclassical buildings, it provides one of the finest sites of any civic university in Britain. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, it is regarded as a world-ranking example of civic architecture.
Social activities
As a capital city, Cardiff offers excellent opportunities for cultural and social activities. Multi-screen cinemas, theatres, concert venues and many other arts facilities can be found in the city. Cardiff is home to the National Orchestra of Wales and the internationally renowned Welsh National Opera, the latter being housed at the spectacular Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay. The New Theatre’s programme of events regularly includes off-Broadway musicals, plays and ballet, while the Sherman Theatre and Chapter Arts Centre offer an eclectic mix of more contemporary film, dance and drama.
Accomodations
Full-time EU postgraduate students are guaranteed a room in University accommodation. For further information, please see the following page on the Residences Division website: www.cardiff.ac.uk/13268
Further options include private accommodation and private halls of residence. Information about postgraduate accommodation can be found at www.cardiff.ac.uk//postgraduate/pgaccommodation/
UK postgraduate students are advised to seek accommodation in the private sector. The University organises a House Hunting Event in August each year to assist with this. The event is aimed at new postgraduate students seeking single or rented accommodation. For information about the House Hunting Event, please see www.cardiff.ac.uk/postgraduate/pghousehunting
The Student Advice Centre at Cardiff University Students' Union offers advice on a range of matters related to private accommodation in Cardiff. For more information, please see www.cardiffstudents.com/main/support/advice

Cardiff University is among the few universities in Britain to have a dedicated facility for its postgraduate students. Opened in September 1999, the Graduate Centre serves as a hub for taught and research postgraduate students. It is not a replacement for your School, but is a source of additional academic and social facilities and events, as well as a centre for the broader postgraduate community.
Located on the third floor of the Students’ Union Building on Park Place, the Graduate Centre is open Monday to Saturday, 8.00 a.m. until 12.00 midnight and Sunday, 12.00 noon until 12.00 midnight.
