NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences
NHTV is an education institution with more
than 6,500 students from over 50 countries. It is situated in the south of the Netherlands, in the historical city of Breda, only 100 km from both Amsterdam and Brussels. NHTV was founded in 1966 as an institute offering management programmes in tourism and leisure and in this field, it is the largest and leading education institution in the world. NHTV has a strongly international character and we constantly seek to enhance this international dimension. NHTV is a member of various international organisations, including the Education Council of the UN World Tourism Organization. NHTV was the first university of applied sciences in the Netherlands to receive the TedQual Certificate from UN WTO for its Bachelor programme in Tourism Management. This acknowledgement shows that UN WTO endorses the quality of tourism education at NHTV. We work together with many leading education institutions, for example in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, France, Spain and Sweden. As a result, there are many opportunities for intensive student and lecturer exchanges. Due in part to the joint research programmes, student conferences and summer courses, the international character of the programmes is strengthened. Furthermore, we encourage work placements abroad or at internationally oriented companies.

The city
Breda is a historical city with approx. 170.000 inhabitants. It is located in the south of the Netherlands and only 100 km from both Amsterdam and Brussels. Some 13,500 young people are studying in Breda. In the past few decades, the city has developed into a vibrant, convivial student city. You can have a relaxing stroll along the characteristic streets, have a drink at an outdoor café in one of the old squares, or enjoy yourself on an evening out in one of the many sociable pubs. In terms of sport and culture, the city also has a lot to offer. As a student, you may enjoy many of the city’s venues at reduced rates. Discover it yourself!
Social activities
Breda is brimming with events. Annually recurring events include the Jazz Festival, Smaakvol Breda, Popfestival Breda Barst, Dance Tour Breda and the Singelloop. During the summer months, free live and film performances take place in Valkenbergpark. At the beginning of the academic year, the HBO Intro Festival is organised, the largest student festival in Breda.
Studying in Breda goes together with practising sports with BRESS. BRESS stands for Breda Students Sports Foundation. For € 45 per academic year, you can buy a sports card which enables you to practise a variety of sports, such as various ball sports, steps, capoeira, bodyshape and swimming. Furthermore, BRESS has an extensive fitness room with cardio and power equipment. You have unlimited access to these facilities, if you are in possession of a fitness card in addition to your regular sports card. Go to www.bress.nl for more information.
Accomodations
Some 70 % of the students who study at NHTV live in student digs in Breda. NHTV does not offer on-campus housing Living and Studying in Breda facilities. That is why they often live in a student house, sometimes they share a flat with a few fellow students, or they live with host families. Start looking for a room in time, because when the academic year starts, rooms are in limited supply. Good to know: in the course of the year, rooms always become available! Foreign students may turn to International Office for help in finding accommodation. As a house hunter, you can sign up with Woonloket Breda: www.woonloketbreda.nl, a joint website of the three major housing corporations in Breda. Useful websites also include www.studentenkamers.nl and www.kamernet.nl. You can also place an advertisement in newspaper BN/DeStem or hang up a ‘room wanted’ note at NHTV.
Student_union
Several student organisations are active within NHTV. Depending on the study programme you choose, you may want to join one of these organisations. Great fun of course, but not mandatory. Being a member of a student organisation does enable you to get to know new people rather quickly, though. Moreover, the student organisations boast wide-ranging activity programmes. Parties, sporting days or other events are organised regularly. You can also make an active contribution to one of the student organisations, for instance in the executive committee, in the editorial office of a student magazine, or in the committee in charge of organising parties or events. NHTV also has its own student association for international students: Compass. It supports foreign students, makes sure they have a great time and promotes integration with the Dutch students. And what’s more, NHTV has its own theatre group and radio station. In other words, there is enough to do if you are into an active student life!
