Architectural engineers are involved in all facets of the development and design of
buildings and building systems, including planning, structural form finding and design,
as well as the functional design and operation of the building.

An architectural engineer applies and combines the skills of many engineering disciplines to create and synthesize component- and building-designs in cooperation with other professionals while bearing in mind their impact on architecture and the local environment.

The role of architectural engineers can overlap with that of the architect and other engineers. Like architects, they seek to achieve optimal designs within the overall constraints, but mainly use engineering tools to attain their goal. It takes profound knowledge and commitment to master all the disciplines involved including the mechanics of structural behavior, material science, energy technology,
heat and mass transfer, acoustics, computer modeling and simulation, 3D-visualization,
and communications and management skills.

The MSc education in Architectural Engineering currently offers specializations in
structural design and in functional design. Additional individual specialization is
possible through elective courses comprising a variety of subjects such as bridge design, structural glazing, seismic design, wind engineering, facades, acoustics, fire
safety and services for heating, lighting, water supply, drain and sewers as well as
town plans.

Bachelor degree (or equivalent) in Engineering or Science obtained at an internationally recognized university.

At least 70-75% of the maximum obtainable grade. Can vary depending on the grading system of the university having awarded the Bachelor degree.

Special Solid skills in Mathematics plus basic computer and programming skills.

Course content

Architectural Engineering – study lines

Structural Design

This specialization covers the design of structures and structural building systems
including planning, structural form finding, computational modeling and detailed design.

The technological specialization courses cover conceptual design of structures,advanced structural design in concrete, wood and steel, as well as computational modeling techniques for plates and shells.

The general architectural engineering competences are acquired through the atelier or open-space project courses, which impart integrated structural and functional design, as well as interaction with the project groups of the functional-design study line.

Additional specialization can be acquired through elective courses on relevant subjects
such as vibration of structures, bridge structures, acoustics, fire safety and fire
dynamics.

Functional Design

This specialization covers the design of building envelopes and technical services including heating, ventilation and air-conditioning, and assessing the total energy balance and the effects on the building design.

The technological specialization courses cover thermal building physics, technical building services, sustainable buildings and integrated design.

The general Architectural engineering competences are given through the atelier or
open- space project courses, which gradually encourage integration of structural and
functional design, as well as interaction with the project groups of the structuraldesign
study line.

Additional specialization can be performed through the elective courses which enable
the study of relevant subjects such as solar heating, acoustics, renovation, ventilation
and computational modeling of air flow in buildings (CFD).

State Scholarships are given to a group of Non-EU/EEA citizens and Company Sponsorships are given to a group of EU/EEA citizens.
