Course content
There are six taught modules in the first stage of the course. The modules approach the subject from a variety of angles that are intended to cut across the integrating threads of heating, lighting, acoustics and sustainability.
Students take no more than two modules at a time, to leave space for projects in which they can apply the ideas they are learning. The scheme can be taken locally over one year full-time or two years part-time. There is also a version for distance learning over the World Wide Web, in which private study is assisted by peer discussion and tutorials in the module forums. The on-line material developed for this version is available to students on the local course, giving support particularly to students whose first language in not English.
In the second stage, students prepare a research dissertation, in which they are able to pursue in greater depth an aspect of the subject that interests them.

Funding is highly competitive and we recommend planning and researching your funding options well in advance of commencing your studies. Also, in most cases, you will need to have a firm offer of a place to study on a postgraduate programme before you will be considered for an award. It is therefore important that you apply for your chosen postgraduate programme well in advance of the closing date for funding applications as set by the relevant funding body.
